The Molecular Biology Core Facilities was founded by Paul Morrison and Richard Kolodner in 1985 after acquiring the first automated DNA synthesizer. In subsequent years, the MBCF deployed the first generation of automated gel based DNA Sanger sequencers, capillary array DNA sequencers, peptide synthesizers, N-terminal protein sequencers, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers, and Next Generation DNA sequencers.
CURRENT STAFF
Zach Herbert - Director AKA our “ more experienced co-worker”. Zach oversees all of the MBCF and is a great resource to contact for questions about current and future projects. Contact: [email protected]
Maura Berkeley - Lab Manager Oversees day to day lab activities and can help answer questions regarding your project management needs. Maura uses her 21+ years experience at DFCI to help users have a positive start to finish experience. When not in the lab, Maura spends her time at the baseball field, in her garden, or tending to her cats and dog. Contact:[email protected]
Allen Potter - Senior Genomic Technologist Allen is our library prep and automation expert who works in research and development in the lab. He is a great resource to contact for deciding library prep needs. Outside of the lab, Allen is an avid reader and enjoys spending time outdoors hiking and skiing. Contact:[email protected]
Christo Lokosi - Genomic Technologist Christo is a working on the library preps, validating new protocols and assisting in the developmental projects of the MBCF. Apart from rocking sequencing he likes rock music and European football as a true Greek would. His favorite Greek word is ‘‘μεταλαμπαδεύω”. Contact: [email protected]
Sing Leung (Danny) - Genomic Technologist Sing Leung, English name “Danny,” a Genomic Technologist at DFCI MBCF, specializes in DNA and RNA QC, Library Preparation, launching sequencing runs, and workflow optimization. His organizational skills and passion for advancing genomics research contribute to the dynamic environment of MBCF. Beyond the lab, Danny is also a NCCAOM certified Massachusetts Licensed Acupuncturist. He occasionally practices Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Therapy on weekends, showcasing a unique blend of Western molecular biology and Eastern healing arts. Proficient in both Mandarin and Cantonese, Danny brings a multicultural perspective to his work. In addition to his professional pursuits, Danny enjoys exploring diverse cultures through travel. His curiosity and commitment to continuous learning reflect his holistic approach to both scientific and personal endeavors. Contact: [email protected]
Mary Mick - Senior Research Technician Mary has been a part of the MBCF team for over 3 years. With a AA from Berkshire Community College and BA in Biology from Smith College, she is interested in molecular biology and infectious disease, and is passionate about ecology and bioethics. Mary performs RNA and DNA QC and provides QC feedback for different applications. She is a good person to talk to about kits and quantification and qualitative range of QC instruments, sample submission, and specialized QC projects. Mary also plans and launches sequencing runs, maintains instruments, and performs some library preparations.
